First, I need to explain where I am coming from:

I was born into a strong protestant family. My grandfather was a presbyterian minster in Iowa and an uncle was also a minister. My Aunt was a protestant missionary. I attended church and am familiar with the bible. I joined the Mormon church at age 24, which was 37 years ago.

As a protestant, no one ever told me that the Father, Jesus and the Holy Ghost were the same being. We understood that the Catholics believed this but we thought it was a ridiculous and superstitious philosophy. I was taught that Jesus was the only begotten son of God. It was the very foundation of our beliefs.

I have not looked into the spread of the trinity philosophy but I have the feeling that it has grown over the years in the protestant faiths, whereas, it was not there before.
